If you take a step back and reflect on the images that you personally find motivating, it’s 100% possible that this is a conclusion you would draw - Perhaps the #fitspo you’ve been focused on is inappropriate for your individual situation and is setting you up for disappointment. Many people do spend their time reaching towards impossible standards, and identifying that in your own actions would certainly help you make healthier and more satisfying choices in the future.
However, that’s just one realization among many, many different possibilities:
Maybe some self-reflection will help you see that your preferred #fitspo defines health in only a narrow and exclusive manner, ignoring the many different shapes and elements of a healthy lifestyle.
Maybe you’ll realize that you are treating fitness models like objects, and have latched onto #fitspo as a method of sexual gratification. Perhaps this has little to do with motivation and everything to do with finding a socially acceptable excuse to stare at people in tight clothing, sexualizing their actions, dehumanizing them.
Maybe you’ll see that your definition of fitness and beauty is highly influenced by Western beauty standards, to the extent that you have difficulty recognizing the value in bodies that aren’t within that box.
Maybe you haven’t been thinking about this too hard or doing much research. If you’re just sharing what you’re seeing and aren’t looking deeper into anything that you view, you may be getting pulled into misinformation or views that could hurt you (and others) in the long run.
Maybe you’ll see that your #fitspo is less about you and more about providing representation for others so that they can see themselves reflected in the media you’re sharing. Your role could be to amplify other voices.
Maybe you’ll realize that you engage in #fitspo as a way of reassuring yourself that you have value and your actions have meaning. If you can get congratulations on your hard work and accomplishments, then you feel better for it. Or perhaps, it you can put down others in order to feel superior, or if you can get confirmation that people look up to your body type or are jealous of your weight loss, you feel fulfilled.
There are a million “maybes” here.
The whole point is to sit down, do some thinking and reach your own conclusions. Self-reflection can only help you. Thinking about your own actions and they way they impact your world is an important part of living your best, healthiest life.

- how to utilise your studyblr for motivation
- ‘cliques’ on tumblr + not having ‘studyblr’ items
- photo editing tips (tbh, I don’t even do this much anymore - I just say fk it and post)
- just a little random comment about having lots of stationery, etc
